MIA and a Product Review!

September 28th, 2009 by Karen

Well, I know I have been MIA for a couple of weeks. I have so much to share….

But I can’t. And that is what makes this blog so hard somedays.  I have so much going on that I cannot share…

But one thing I can share is a product review.

Have you heard of the Fibersphere? I hadnt either until a few weeks ago when another designer Twittered about hers.  And I had to try it out.

I got mine about 3 weeks ago and I have been using it ever since.  It is fantastic. I have the Pink 7″ ball pictured at the right.

What do I love about it?  I dont have to wind a outside pull skein in order to keep it from flopping around everywhere.  It keeps work easy and neat. and I can fit almost any size skein in it!

I love the fact too that if you purchase a pink one, 5% goes to Breast Cancer Research.  I may have to buy another just for that reason.

If you get a chance to try one.. get it. You will love it!

Why I Love CGOA

September 2nd, 2009 by Karen

For those of you who havent heard of CGOA, it is the Crochet Guild of America. I have been a member since 2002 and in the last 7 years, I have gained more than I can possibly say. I thought I would list a few reasons why I love the guild.

1) I have been able to attend 3 conferences to teach and meet many crocheters both new and experience, and many professionals.

2) I have been given the oportunity to meet with publishers to pitch my ideas and and have gotten many lucrative contracts because of that.

3) I have gotten to meet many crocheters ON LINE through the Yahoo group for members and have learned from them about new ideas, yarns, stitches and so much more about our industry.

4) I have learned so much through being a mentor to associate professional members. (Hi Andee and Patricia!)

5) The Camraderie is just amazing.

6) All crocheters are accepted from the person who loves to just be a crocheter, to the charity crocheter, to the Professional crocheter, to the kids and tweens and teens. No matter the skill level, no matter what.

7) When I need help with something crochet related… all I need to do is ask!

8) All of my favorite designers are members!

9) We have an awesome board that is listening to our ideas and bringing them to fruition as quickly as possible.

10) CGOA is all about promoting and furthering the art of crochet.

If you would like to check out CGOA, visit the website. There are lots of perks and I know that the board is working on a whole lot more for us in the future!

Scripture Afghan

September 2nd, 2009 by Karen

I am so happy that the school year is over. The kids are thrilled too. However, This year my son had his favorite teacher for the 2nd time in 3 years. First in the 4th Grade, then again for 6th Grade English, Reading and Spelling.

At the beginning of the school year, Mr. Hallett told us that this was his last year at the school. He was moving to Texas! All of us were grateful that our children were able to have him one last time, yet sad to see him leave.

Towards the end of the year, Tyler and I were talking and he asked if I would crochet something for Mr. Hallett to remember him by. After some discussion, we decided on the LA Scripture Afghan. (#2770) Tyler picked out the colors and I did some modifications. Instead of making several of each of the 24 7-inch squares, I decided to make one of each square and modify the pattern so that each square was 12 inches.

I think it turned out pretty well!

And here are Tyler and Mr. Hallet on the last day of school!

You can see the tears! :(

New Pattern: Savvy Origami Wrap

September 2nd, 2009 by Karen
Savvy Origami Wrap was inspired by Great Yarns! best selling pattern, Wrapped in Alpaca. (Great Yarns! is the LYS I teach / work one day a week at)

The original pattern is a Knitted 1×1 Rib pattern.  This is my crochet take, using a Middle Eastern Stitch Pattern.

Made with Cascade Yarns Pure Alpaca in Color # 3040, it is perfect for crisp fall and cool winter days!

If you are going to Stitches Midwest September 10-13, 2009, Make sure you stop by the Great Yarns! booth (#300-308) to see the actual model seen here AND to purchase the pattern and yarn to make this great wrap.  Until the September 15th, Great Yarns! will be the only place to get the pattern!
