Shiny and New

April 22nd, 2010 by Karen

I don’t know if any of you have heard Mary Beth Temple’s Show Getting Loopy?  She has a weekly Blog Talk Radio show on crochet.

This past week was the 2nd annual Flamie Awards.  This award program was started by the Crochet Liberation Front founder and fearless leader, Laurie Wheeler!

This year I was nominated for Best Home Decor Designer of 2009.  And had some pretty stiff competition!

I am pleased and humbled to have been awarded the honor!

Thank you to EVERYONE who voted for me! This is a great honor and I am humbled that you enjoy my work so much!

DesignerHomeDecor2009 Isnt it gorgeous?  Shiny and 3-D.  This is the work of Darlisa Riggs of Crochet Uncut!  She is a fabulous Graphic artist!

Again.. thank you everyone!!

After 7 Years Waiting….

April 20th, 2010 by Karen

Cover I am so happy to finally announce that my new book, Fair Isle for Crochet, is now available from Leisure Arts!

In this book there are 5 afghans all done in single crochet with a 2-color “switch” in each row.  Using this simple technique, you can create fun and fabulous afghans for anyone in the family.

But 7 years you ask?  Yes S-E-V-E-N Years!

I originally designed these afghans in 2002-2003 and started submitting them to publishers.  In fact I submitted them to 5 different publishers!

The original series had seven afghans.  2 of them were selected individually.

Fair Isle Afghan was featured in 2004’s Top Techniques and Special Stitches Afghans.FairisleHearts

Cozy Evening Afghan was featured in 2007’s 50 Sensational Crochet Afghans and Throws.

But the other 5 were shelved for several years until I proposed them again to Leisure Arts in Fall 2008.

Sometimes good ideas just need a few years on the shelf until their time has come! And from the response I have gotten so far, I think the time has finally come!

Here are the photos from the new book!

I think they turned out well, don’t you?

If you are planning to attend Chain Link Conference in Manchester this coming July, be sure to take my class on Fair Isle that weekend.  We will be exploring this technique in a very simple but fun way! :)

New Pattern: Soulful Seas Mobius

February 15th, 2010 by Karen

Remember a few weeks ago when I posted about a drawing I was doing for my Flat Feet Challenge?  Well.. Finally, it is DONE!

CassieWeb TwistWeb

That is my darling daughter as the model!

Soulful Seas Mobius!

With only 400 yards, it really limited what I could do besides SOCKS that was fashion forward. The design came to me when I was going through some old files on my computer and I found this old pattern:

MobiusI designed this Mobius back in 2004 for the Canadian Publisher, Kustom Krafts when they launched a line of Knit and Crochet.  That division is now long gone.. but I have the books to prove it. (For the record… I plan to re introduce this entire book as part of my own line. now)

I used a completely different stitch pattern, but the idea is the same. I dont have a picture of the orginal as a cowl, but in this case the shawl can be doubled around the neck and be worn as a head covering too.

If you haven’t entered the drawing.. make sure you visit this post to enter to receive a FREE COPY of this pattern!  Entries will be taken until February 26th!

A Challenge … And a Drawing!

January 24th, 2010 by Karen

The other day, I was at my LYS Great Yarns! while the shop owner and staff were going through the shop listing items they were planning to bring to the Seattle Sewing Expo at the Puyallup Fairgrounds next month.

DSC03294 As they were going through the shop, a comment was made that the Flat Feet weren’t selling as well as regular Sock Yarn and that maybe we should come up with other items to make other than socks with Flat Feet.

As the resident Crocheter on staff, I took this challenge and after looking at the different colors we had in stock, I came up with a cool new design. It’s still in progress.. but will Launch at the Sewing Expo.

But I have a question for all of you out there…

What would you / have you crocheted

with Flat Feet?

If you would like to receive a free copy of this new pattern, Post a reply to this post with your answer to the above question.  I will continue to take responses until Friday, February 26, 2010.  I will draw the winner on Sunday, February 28, 2010.

DONE DONE DONE!

January 3rd, 2010 by Karen

Finally…

I started these socks for my daughter in July.. and then with a book contract.. they went on hold until this last week.

But they are DONE!DSC03263 The yarn used is

Black Trillium Fibre Studio Roman Blue Sock yarn in the Colorway “Cassie”.  I had this yarn custom dyed for my daughter in her favorite brown an pink colors.

The pattern I used is

Sunday Swing Socks by Kristel Nyberg from the Summer 2009 issue of Knitty. The only difference I made in them was that I only did 2 repeats of the pattern instead of  5-7 of them so that they would be ankle socks rather than full length socks.

They Turned out pretty good don’t you think?
